Periodontal Exam

A comprehensive examination is where treatment starts, because a plan is only as good as the measurements and data behind it.

in brief

A comprehensive exam assesses your gum health, your bone health, your teeth and how they bite together, and your general medical health, alongside x-rays. Those can come from your own dentist or be taken here. We would rather spend the time getting this right than start treatment on an incomplete picture.

What to expect

What happens during a periodontal exam

Measurements around every tooth

We record your gum measurements with a small ruler, including how much root is exposed by recession and whether any tooth has become mobile.

Reading the x-rays alongside them

The clinical findings are correlated with what the x-rays show, because neither on its own tells the whole story.

A plan built around your goals

From that, a personalized treatment plan that works toward the oral health goals you actually have, discussed with you rather than handed to you.

What we assess

What the exam covers

  • Gum health, measured rather than estimated.
  • Bone health, read from your x-rays.
  • Your teeth, and how they come together when you bite.
  • Your medical health, which affects both healing and what we recommend.
  • X-rays, from your dentist or taken in our office.

What our patients say

After doing a consultation with Dr. Dempsey, I was extremely impressed by his professionalism and care. He took his time to listen to me and to understand my dental background better than any doctor has in the past. I am so grateful that I found Dr. Dempsey!
Jordan Stanek
Dr. Dempsey is by far THE BEST! He is caring, thorough, and professional, and he is always willing to go the extra mile to make sure that his patients are 100% satisfied with his service. I can’t recommend him enough!
Shannon McCaul
Dr. Dempsey was the third periodontist to attempt grafting procedures on a couple of my teeth, but he was the first periodontist whose surgeries had successful outcomes. I would trust him with any periodontal surgery from here on out.

common questions

Common questions

No. Many of our patients are referred by their general dentist, and many come to us directly. We are happy to serve you either way.

Often, yes. Sometimes we need more information and more images, and we can take what is needed here.

Usually not. The first appointment is for examining, measuring, and talking it through. We would rather you left understanding the plan than part-way into one.
